Companion Headstones

A Companion Headstone is a loving tribute to a couple or a close set of family members, usually. When you start to design a companion memorial there is added difficulty to decide if there will be one central theme or to honor each life more individually.

There are so many ways to personalize their lasting memory in stone. Companion memorials can be flat or upright memorials. They can have two separate pieces of granite or one fluid piece. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

To give you a clearer picture of how you could memorialize your relationship we will cover the shapes of companion headstones, design elements of companion headstones, and choices of material.

Shapes of Companion Headstones

There are many choices when it comes to the shape of your companion headstone. There are immensely more when you choose an upright design but still a few if you are going with a flat grave marker.

An upright gravestone can be cut to almost any shape with one of the most popular being a heart. That timeless image of love is a perfect way to honor a couple for eternal rest.

As in the monument pictured there are many ways to also honor the family who mourned for their loved ones with benches and vases. This particular design leaves no questions as to how these companions are related and how they will spend eternity, in one another’s arms.

Design Elements of Companion Headstones

With all headstones, there are many design choices to be made. Will the stone be traditional and straightforward with little embellishment? Or will the stone tell a clearer story of the lives of the souls buried there?

Usually, with companion monuments, the marriage date of a couple is added to the stone to forever mark their love in time. Also, an image is usually added, sometimes it’s simple and elegant roses others it’s personal hobbies like a motorcycle and a butterfly. No matter how the stone is adorned it is clear by a companion headstone that the two souls were linked.
